Wandering Walls

Whenever foreign guests ask us for recommendations on local cuisine in Hengchun, Zeng's Little House is always on our list. Apart from being not far from the Wandering Walls, the most important reason is that foreign guests would naturally prefer to taste some local Taiwanese food. Unless they specifically want seafood, Zeng's Little House can be said to be a highly recommended Taiwanese restaurant. Even we, who have been living in Hengchun for a long time, often go there to eat. The prices are around NT$400 to NT$800 per person, and the flavors are quite good.

Introduction to Dishes at Zeng's Little House

There are several signature dishes that most people who have tried them highly recommend. Aside from the specially recommended dishes, the other items depend on personal taste; some may love them while others may not, but overall, they are generally quite tasty. Here are a few dishes that are recommended by most people:

1. Dongpo Pork東坡肉 NT$360: This dish is almost universally recommended and a must-order. The lean meat part is tender and flavorful, and the fatty parts and skin are cooked to have a rich gelatinous texture without being mushy. Paired with slightly sour shredded bamboo shoots, it balances the richness of the Dongpo Pork well. This is a flavorful dish that goes well with rice; if two people go out to eat, ordering one Dongpo Pork with a plate of stir-fried vegetables and a bowl of soup would be just right.
2. Crispy Skin Chicken脆皮雞 (limited availability) NT$460: This is our second recommended dish. The crispiness of the chicken skin is truly unmatched elsewhere and is impressively delightful. However, one serving consists of half a chicken, which is quite a generous portion. Gavin has been there several times and orders the crispy skin chicken every time, as the crispy skin is simply irresistible. However, Gavin has also noticed that the crispy skin chicken may not always taste the same; there was one occasion when the flavor was just average—the skin was crispy, but the chicken itself wasn’t that tasty, perhaps due to the batch of chicken being different.
3. Saliva Chicken 口水雞NT$350: We must say that the seasoning of this dish has won our hearts. The chilled chicken, combined with cilantro, cucumber, peanuts, and Sichuan peppercorns, gives a spicy and sour flavor that is very appetizing. Those who enjoy spicy food should give this a try.
4. Cold vegetable fern涼拌過貓 NT$200: This is another dish highly recommended by many. The vegetable fern paired with refreshing sesame sauce has a simple and refreshing taste.
5. Drinks - White Gourd Lemonade飲料冬瓜尬檸檬: Among the drinks available for self-service, we were particularly impressed by the White Gourd Lemonade, which has a sweet and sour taste that we greatly enjoyed.
